Business Card Size Guide: World Tour
“How big IS a business card?”
The size of a business card is not something most people think about—until they need to print one. Even business owners who’ve done it before tend to forget what the standard business card size is when it comes time to create a new design.
What most people don’t realize is that there really isn’t a global standard for acceptable business card dimensions. Instead, they vary from one region to the next. The common denominator for the majority of accepted size standards is that the card should fit comfortably in your wallet.
If you do business with foreign clients or have international offices, creating business cards that fit in with the local standards can show both cultural appreciation and awareness. This article will discuss everything you need to know about the business card size options around the globe, complete with some essential size-related business card printing considerations. A Global [Print] Economy

A millimeter here or there still leaves a business card with a common design and purpose. We can all appreciate the unique details that make us who we are, along with the bigger ideas we share as we navigate our global economy
Ensuring a Perfectly Printed Project
When designing your card, determine if your printer assumes an 1/8 inch bleed in your layout and then update the dimensions of your design accordingly (adding 1/4 inch to both the total height and width). The “bleed” is the area of your design that gets cut off after printing. To avoid any awkward and unprofessional unintended white space around the edge of your business card, extend your design elements past the trim line to the edge of the bleed area. If so, you should take this into account by adding 0.25 inches to your total height and width dimension. When you design with MyCreativeShop, all of our business card templates automatically include a bleed of 1/8 inch on all sides.
Any critical design element or text needs to stay clear of the bleed, or it will get cut off from the final card. In most cases, your business card’s “sweet spot” or “safe area” is a centered rectangle measuring 3.34″ x 1.84″ (approximately 85mm x 46.7mm).
If you have design elements (such as a background color or image) that extends to the edge of your card, it must continue on the bleed area as well. Be careful with thin borders near the bleed area, as they can get cut unevenly and give an “off-center” look. To avoid this, either thicken up the border or place them within the safe area. In the end, keeping these print guidelines in mind can ensure your printed business card looks as fabulous as you intend!
